Often credited for being the cause of civilization itself, beer has an extremely rich and vibrant history on a global scale. Learn more about the history of beer and brewing with a timeline of important dates in the evolution of beer.

1300 BC

The earliest physical evidence of barley based fermented beverage, calcium oxalate (beer stone) found on ancient vessel in the Zagros Mountains of western Iran. A beer fossil!

1066 AD

At the battle of Hastings, the British are defeated by the Normans. A point when wine started to gain favor as a more sophisticated beverage than beer.

1067

First historical mention of hops, credited to Abbess Hildegard of Bingen

1400s

Cave ageing (lagering) is first introduced by Bavarian monks. And brother, it caught on.

1516

German Reinheitsgebot (Bavarian purity law) was enacted. One of the first consumer porection laws!

1620

The Mayflower lands at Plymouth Rock, full of thirsty pilgrims.

1842

The Pilsener style is introduced in Pilzn, Bohemia (present day Czech Republic). Bohemians are stoked.

1860s

Anheuser Busch pioneers artifiical refrigerated railcars and railside ice houses, allowing him to transport Budweiser nationwide.

1870s

Louis Pasteur discovers yeast. A big day.

1880s

With 2,300 brewers in operation, it's the Golden age of brewing in America.

1920

Prohibition, the 18th Amendment, goes into effect on January 16.

1933

Prohibition, dubbed the "Noble Experiment" was fully repealed on December 5.

1967

The first light beer (Gablinger's Diet Beer) was produced by New York's Rheingold Brewing Co.

1970s

Domestic brewers consolidate and imported beers catch on. Regional breweries start losing market share.

1976

New Albion Brewing Company, in Sonoma, California, is opened by Jack McAuliffe and is America's first micro-brewery.

1981

Only 52 breweries in operation in the United States.

2005

Craft beer becomes the fastest growing adult beverage

2008

More than 1,400 breweries in operation in the US
